Driving Licence Requirements - UK Car Hire

Driving Licence Requirements for Renting a Car in the UK

Welcome to The Car Rental Centre. Whether you are stepping off a flight at Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW), starting a Scottish Highlands adventure from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) Scotland or Glasgow Airport (GLA) Scotland, or picking up a vehicle for a city break in London, Oxford, Cambridge, or York, checking your driving credentials is our first step to getting you on the road safely.

Whether you are a local resident holding a UK driving licence or visiting from overseas, here is everything you need to know about our driving licence requirements.

UK Licence Holders: Providing Your DVLA Check Code

If you hold a UK driving licence, the old paper counterpart is no longer valid. Instead, you must provide a unique DVLA Check Code when you arrive at the rental desk. Presenting this code allows our staff to securely verify your driving entitlements and check for any penalty points or endorsements.

How to get it: You can generate your code quickly and for free on the official government website: View or share your driving licence information (GOV.UK)

Validity: Your code is valid for 21 days from the moment you generate it.

One-Time Use: For your security, the code can only be viewed and redeemed once before it expires.

Multiple Rentals: If you are a frequent renter, you can generate up to 5 unique codes within a 24-hour period.

What if I forget to bring my DVLA code?

If you arrive at any of our branches without your code, you will be asked to generate one online using your smartphone or tablet at the desk. Alternatively, for a small fee, our team can contact the DVLA to verify your details over the phone (subject to DVLA operating hours). Please note: This telephone service is only applicable to UK driving licence holders.

Overseas Renters: Driving in the UK with a Foreign Licence

We warmly welcome international renters at The Car Rental Centre. If you are visiting from overseas, you can legally drive in the UK using a valid, full foreign driving licence for up to 12 months.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Frequently Asked Questions: Navigating Licence Rules

Do driving licence requirements change depending on where I rent in the UK?

No. Whether you are flying into Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW), starting a scenic Scottish road trip from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) Scotland or Glasgow Airport (GLA) Scotland, or picking up a car for a historic tour in London, Oxford, Cambridge, or York, the driving licence requirements remain exactly the same. All The Car Rental Centre branches strictly follow the same DVLA and international licence protocols outlined above.

Do I still need to bring my physical driving licence if I have a DVLA code?

Yes. The DVLA check code only allows us to view your electronic driving record. You must still present your original, valid physical driving licence photocard to the staff at The Car Rental Centre upon arrival. We cannot accept photocopies, photographs on your phone, or expired driving licences.

How long do I need to have held my driving licence to rent a car?

To rent a vehicle with us, you must have held your full, valid driving licence for a minimum of 12 months prior to the start of your rental. For certain premium or larger vehicle categories, we may require you to have held your licence for at least 24 months.

Can I rent a car if my UK driving licence has an old address on it?

Ideally, the address on your driving licence should match your current residence. If your physical driving licence shows an outdated address, you must bring two additional, recent forms of proof of address (such as a bank statement or utility bill dated within the last 3 months) that show your current living address and match the name on your booking.

I lost my physical driving licence photocard. Can I just use the DVLA check code?

No. While the DVLA check code is required to view your driving record, it does not replace your physical ID. You must present your original, valid physical driving licence photocard at the desk. We cannot accept temporary cover notes or renewal letters.

Do I need the paper counterpart of my UK driving licence?

If you hold a standard UK photocard driving licence issued in England, Scotland, or Wales, you do not need the paper counterpart, as these were abolished by the DVLA in 2015. Note: If you still hold an older, paper-only driving licence (issued before 1998), this is still valid, but you must bring another form of official photographic ID, such as a passport.

Can I rent a car with a provisional driving licence or learner's permit?

No. The Car Rental Centre requires all drivers to hold a full, valid, and unencumbered driving licence. We do not rent vehicles to individuals holding a provisional driving licence or learner's permit.

Can I rent a car if I have points or endorsements on my UK licence?

Minor offences (like basic speeding points) are generally acceptable as long as you have not been disqualified. However, major convictions (such as drink driving or dangerous driving) may prevent you from renting a vehicle. If you have significant points or serious endorsement codes on your record, please contact The Car Rental Centre directly before booking.

Do additional drivers need to meet the same licence requirements?

Yes. Anyone planning to drive the rental vehicle must be present at the desk at the time of pick-up, and they must provide the exact same driving licence documentation as the main driver. The main driver and any additional drivers do not need to hold driving licences from the same country; however, each driver must meet the specific requirements for their own country of issue.
